The artist’s life (or at least the stage actress’ life) is not an easy one to lead. The glitz and the glamour you see is only the icing on the cake and usually the public don’t get to see the effort it takes to make it all happen. Most of the time we rehearse for months yet just earn enough to scrape home a small living. However, we already knew that when we got ourselves into this business! Personally, I wouldn’t want to be involved in any other industry because the feeling one gets when performing on stage with a team of artists you trust and enjoy working with really cannot be felt anywhere else. Apart from my work on stage, I also have a small business to run drama and musical theatre shows in schools. I really enjoy customizing the courses and shows for each group of different students because no two groups are ever the same. Running a show is tough work for the children but the sense of achievement and the satisfaction you see on their faces when it’s finally time for the curtain call is the best reward you can ever get as a teacher. I believe that drama can help bring positive to the lives of Hong Kong children because I saw first hand what life skills I learned from studying this discipline myself: self-confidence, self-discovery, team work, independence, free and critical thinking, courage to be yourself and standby your own values. Those skills may seem basic to many of us, but they were skills that I found children lacked when I worked as an English teacher at a local school. Now, I don’t want to turn this sharing piece into an essay here, but there’s so much that the arts can do for the minds and souls of children everywhere and I’m so blessed to be able to work in this area for work!
